Three Captains Suiting Up for Midwest League’s All-Star Game

Will Benson has earned some hardware already this season and now he will add two-time All-Star to the list of professional accomplishments on his resume.

The 21-year-old slugger is one of three Lake County Captains named to participate for the Midwest League’s Eastern Division All-Star team on Tuesday night from South Bend, Indiana. The first pitch of the night is scheduled for 7:35 PM ET. Read More

Benson Claims Second Midwest League Player of the Week Nod

For the second time this season, an offensive tear at the plate has earned Lake County’s Will Benson the Midwest League’s Player of the Week honor.

Working with the Indians’ Class-A Captains affiliate for the second straight year, the 20-year-old and 2016 first rounder used his lumber well in a nine-hit week between May 13 and May 19 that featured three home runs and five runs batted in. He previously won the second of the Midwest League awards handed out for the 2019 season for his four-homer game hit during games played between April 15 and April 21 and also earned the final award given out by the league during the 2018 season. Pair of Captains Log Time in Midwest League All-Star Classic

The 54th annual Midwest League All-Star Classic took place on Tuesday night from Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing, Michigan, where the best of the Western Division faced off with the beasts of the Eastern Division, including a pair of representatives from the Indians’ Class-A affiliate, the Lake County Captains.

Outfielder Will Benson and pitcher Kyle Nelson got an opportunity to partake in the exhibition contest, while a third Captains representative, pitcher Tommy DeJuneas, missed the game due to injury. Read More

Three Captains Named to Midwest League All-Star Game

The Midwest League, home of the Lake County Captains, has announced its rosters for the 2018 Midwest League All-Star Game from Lansing, Michigan. Three members of the Lake County Captains have been selected to take part in the annual exhibition on June 19.

Pitchers Tommy DeJuneas and Kyle Nelson and outfielder Will Benson will represent the Captains in the 54th MWL All-Star Classic, set to take place at the home of the Lugnuts, Cooley Law School Stadium. Players selected were nominated and selected by the managers of the league. Read More

Cold Weather Fails to Stop Captains from Getting Off to a Hot Start

The Lake County Captains kicked off the 2018 Class-A season in the chilly weather of northeast Ohio last Thursday night, hosting some big names in the Cleveland Indians’ farm system and the Fort Wayne TinCaps.

The Captains made the opener a thriller, needing a three-run ninth inning after being held to just a hit through the first eight innings, getting a game-winning walk-off single from Jorma Rodriguez. Friday’s game was suspended by snow in the fourth inning and picked up over the weekend from Fort Wayne, where the Captains won Saturday’s and Sunday’s games, in addition to the completion of the suspended game, to start the year 4-0. In three of those four games against the TinCaps, the Captains incredibly drew eight walks.

Indians Ink Several Top Draft Picks in Benson, Ice, and Civale

Less than a week since the conclusion of Major League Baseball’s 2016 June Amateur Draft, the Cleveland Indians have come to terms with several selections, including three of their top four picks.

On Friday, the Indians announced the signing of Will Benson, their first round selection taken with the 14th overall pick, to a professional contract. A first baseman/outfielder who turned 18 on Thursday, Benson was in Cleveland on Friday for a physical. The 6’6”, 220 pound left-handed hitter out of The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia, hit .454 with a .566 on-base percentage, eleven doubles, eight homers, and 41 RBI during his senior season.
