Countdown to Opening Day – 72

The origins of the number 72 in Cleveland Indians history are unique, not in how it was worn on the field by its lone wearer, Jason Giambi, but in the circumstances that led to Giambi switching to the number late in the 2014 season. Read More

Former Indians Cliff Lee, Jason Giambi Among First-Year Hall Candidates

November 19, 2019 |

A former Cy Young Award winner for the Tribe is among the first-year candidates on the 2020 Hall of Fame ballot for the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is probably the closest thing there is to a lock for induction among first-year candidates, but after that, the field gets far murkier. Other first-year candidates on the ballot are Bobby Abreu, Josh Beckett, Heath Bell, Eric Chavez, Adam Dunn, Chone Figgins, Rafael Furcal, Jason Giambi, Raul Ibanez, Paul Konerko, Cliff Lee, Carlos Pena, Brad Penny, J.J. Putz, Brian Roberts, Alfonso Soriano and Jose Valverde. Former Indians Jake Westbrook, Travis Hafner and Derek Lowe dropped off the ballot after making their first appearances last year. Read More

Jason Giambi sends a pinch-hit, two-run, walk-off home run into the visitor’s bullpen in right in the bottom of the ninth as the Cleveland Indians come back to win a 5-4 final over the Chicago White Sox. It was, as announcer Tom Hamilton proclaimed, “Mardi Gras, in September, in Cleveland.” Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 25 days

On July 29, 2018, Jim Thome took his place among the other baseball immortals in Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame. Three weeks later, Thome returned home to Cleveland, where he was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame and had his number 25 retired that afternoon.

Thome’s selection last year made him the club’s first Hall of Famer since Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven gained entrance in 2011. Read More

Countdown to Indians’ Opening Day – 25

March 4, 2018 |

While the offseason has been historically slow and the winter has crawled along at an even slower pace, we at Did The Tribe Win Last Night look ahead to the warmer days of the 2018 season by remembering Tribe players past and present.

Countdown to Opening Day – 25 days

On July 29, Jim Thome will take his place among the other baseball immortals in Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame. Three weeks later, Thome will return home to Cleveland for part of the club’s Hall of Fame celebration in his honor on August 18. On that date, fans in attendance will receive a Thome giveaway jersey in a gesture that would seem to be linked to the likely retirement of his number 25 that evening.

While the Cleveland Indians have not formally announced that Thome’s jersey retirement will be part of the weekend ceremony honoring the club’s first Hall of Famer since Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven gained entrance in 2011, it seems a forgone conclusion that the Tribe will take the opportunity with the slugger in town to place his number among other Indians legends honored in such a way.
