Former Indians Cliff Lee, Jason Giambi Among First-Year Hall Candidates

A former Cy Young Award winner for the Tribe is among the first-year candidates on the 2020 Hall of Fame ballot for the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is probably the closest thing there is to a lock for induction among first-year candidates, but after that, the field gets far murkier. Other first-year candidates on the ballot are Bobby Abreu, Josh Beckett, Heath Bell, Eric Chavez, Adam Dunn, Chone Figgins, Rafael Furcal, Jason Giambi, Raul Ibanez, Paul Konerko, Cliff Lee, Carlos Pena, Brad Penny, J.J. Putz, Brian Roberts, Alfonso Soriano and Jose Valverde. Former Indians Jake Westbrook, Travis Hafner and Derek Lowe dropped off the ballot after making their first appearances last year. Read More

Two future Cy Young award winners in Cleveland, one future league Most Valuable Player, and an American League Rookie of the Year all spent time in the number 34 for the Cleveland Indians on the way to taking home some impressive hardware.

None of those applied to the last player to wear the number for the Indians, pitcher Zach McAllister, nor reliever Justin Grimm, who is in camp with the Indians on a non-roster spring invite in the number 34. Read More

There must be something to a number.

The number 65 has been worn by just four players in the 118-year history of the Cleveland Indians organization and in all four occurrences, it was donned by a pitcher. Twice it came on the backs of young starting pitchers trying to catch on at the Major League level. In the two other and more recent times, it has come on former starting pitchers who were converted to relief work late in their minor league careers and got a brief chance to catch on in the Tribe’s bullpen.
