Cookie Carrasco Immortalized in Bobblehead Form

March 7, 2020 |

It was one of the most shocking moments of the 2019 Indians season as the team announced the unnamed blood disorder that prompted Carlos Carrasco to leave the team was, in fact, leukemia.

And it was one of the most touching moments when the Indians showed their support for the starting pitcher during the “Stand Up to Cancer” moment at the All-Star Game at Progressive Field. Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 20 days

A baseball pioneer passed away last February, when the world lost trailblazer Frank Robinson at the age of 83.

Robinson’s incredible playing career, which included stops with the Cincinnati Reds, the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the California Angels, and lastly with the Cleveland Indians, had all of the necessary prerequisites required of a Hall of Fame resume. His 21-year career included a National League Rookie of the Year award in 1956, an NL Most Valuable Player honor in 1961, a Triple Crown season on the way to an American League MVP award in 1966, 14 trips to the Midsummer Classic, an All-Star Game MVP, a World Series MVP during one of his five trips to the Fall Classic (bringing home two rings in 1966 and 1970), and 586 home runs. In 1998, Cleveland retired the number 21 in honor of longtime Tribe player Bob Lemon, whose transition from a position player to a quality starting pitcher led to seven trips to the Midsummer Classic, a leading role on the 1948 and 1954 American League champion Indians teams, a no-hitter, and ultimately, a spot in Cooperstown in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

But while Lemon last wore the number on the field as a player with the Indians in 1958, several big names honored the work that he had done in the digits with quality careers for the club in the years that followed his retirement. Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 23 days

The number 23 holds quite a bit of significance in the city of Cleveland, mainly due to the accolades of one of the best to ever wear it, LeBron James.

During the times that James suited up at the arena separated from Progresive Field by the Gateway Plaza, the Cleveland Indians were enjoying the best years of their own 23, Michael Brantley, who left the team via free agency last offseason after spending ten years on the diamond in the number for the Tribe. On July 29, 2018, Jim Thome took his place among the other baseball immortals in Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame. Three weeks later, Thome returned home to Cleveland, where he was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame and had his number 25 retired that afternoon.

Thome’s selection made him the club’s first Hall of Famer since Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven gained entrance together in 2011. Read More

The Indians essentially swapped backup catchers with the Boston Red Sox in the offseason.

Kevin Plawecki, a former late first round pick by the New York Mets who wore the number 27 for the Indians in his one season in town in 2019, filled the void behind the plate created when Cleveland traded Yan Gomes to Washington. The Indians added the longtime Met in a trade on January 6, 2019, dealing minor leaguer Sam Haggerty and reliever Walker Lockett for him. Read More

Countdown to Opening Day – 29 days

The Cleveland Indians have seldom used the number 29 since the turn of the century. Just four players have worn it in that time over six of the 19 seasons since the world evaded any drastic Y2K related catastrophes. Its inconsistent use now is a stark contrast to some of the lean years for the Tribe, when the number was in use for more than 20 consecutive years from 1966 to 1989, capped off by time spent on the back of one of the team’s legendary sluggers.

A little change of scenery can sometimes do some good and that was the case for former Indian Andre Thornton. It was a trade to Cleveland in 1976 that reignited his struggling pro baseball career. Read More
