Game Preview: Cleveland (72-74) vs. Texas (85-64)

So far this year, the Indians have played the Texas Rangers nine times and they have only been able to win one of those contests.  Cleveland gets their last chance to take down the Rangers tonight as Fausto Carmona (6-14, 5.18, 1.39 WHIP) takes on Alexi Ogando (12-8, 3.71, 1.17 WHIP).

Last night, Shelley Duncan did all that he could to keep the Tribe in the game as he had three amazing catches in the early innings.  But the rules of baseball don’t allow the outfielder to actually go into the stands to catch balls.  Josh Hamilton hit a grand-slam into those stands in the fourth inning which saw the Rangers score eight runs to put the ballgame away.

Last night Justin Masterson gave up three home runs to the Texas Rangers as they took down the Indians by the final score of 10-4.  Just to put those three home runs in perspective, Masterson had given up just seven all season long heading into last night’s start.  Matt Harrison pitched well for the Rangers and earned his 12th win while Masterson fell to 11-10.

This past weekend, the Indians salvaged a split with the Chicago White Sox, taking the final game of the series by a score of 7-3 with Ubaldo Jimenez pitching six decent innings.  While the Indians … Read More

Big Pieces of Trade In Play Over Weekend

September 12, 2011 |

When the Indians swung the deal for Ubaldo Jimenez before the July 31st trade deadline, the reaction was split about 50/50 across baseball and even here at DTTWLN?.  Many thought the Indians were giving up too much with their prospects while others felt that they were giving up the unknown for a sure thing.  All three of the main parts of that trade were in action this weekend as Alex White and Drew Pomeranz both started for the Rockies and Jimenez hit the mound for the Tribe.

Did The Tribe Win Last Night Remembers September 11, 2001

Ten years ago today, terrorists high-jacked four different planes, crashing them into the World Trade Center and Pentagon before the fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It is a day no American will ever forget. Instead of talking Indians baseball this morning, the DTTWLN staff shares their memories of that tragic day.

Ryan Hohman: I was a senior in high school, sitting in history class, when the news came in that the first tower had been hit. Shortly after class ended and I went home. At the time I was taking college courses, so on off days I had a 2 hour break for lunch. This was an off day. I went home and told my mom what happened. I remember the shocked, puzzled look on her face when she reponded, “What?” She came into the living room right as the plane hit the Pentagon.

After the Indians were swept away by Victor Martinez and the Tigers yesterday, they will now have to turn their focus to playing the role of spoiler as they head to the south side of Chicago to battle the White Sox.  The Indians chances of making the playoffs sit at 0.2 percent right now, according to ESPN.com.  What they need to do is try to finish the season as strong as possible and build into next year.

Last night, the Tigers put the final nail in the Indians’ playoff coffin.  Today, they will try to start shoveling dirt on top of the Tribe’s season.  After Detroit jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, the Indians lost all hope of taking the last two games of the series and crawling back into the Central Division race.  Now, they take on the ace of the Tiger’s staff hoping to avoid a sweep at the hands of the division leader.

Tiger Mauling; Tigers 10, Indians 1

September 7, 2011 |

That’s it. You can throw in the towel. The “Here we go Brownies” chants can officially start. With their backs against the wall in a must win situation, the Indians refused to show up for the biggest game of the year. With an embarrassing 10-1 loss Tuesday night, the Indians fell 8.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers.

Just when Tribe fans were thinking Fausto Carmona may have returned to his all-star form of a season ago, he reverted back to his early 2011 ways. Carmona started off the game looking sharp, recording two quick outs before surrendering a walk to Delmon Young. Miguel Cabrera singled to set up the inning for disaster. The debacle began when Carmona balked and sent the runners to second and third.

Things did not go as planned for the Tribe on Labor Day as one bad pitch gave the Tigers all they needed to take game one of the pivotal series at Progressive Field, 4-2.  Victor Martinez continued to haunt his former teammates and Doug Fister shut down the Indians hitters to push the Indians closer to elimination.  The light at the end of the tunnel is getting darker by the day and unless a serious push is made, the Tribe will be on the outside looking in when September ends.

The Indians have won seven of their last ten games as they try to claw their way back to the top of the Central Division.  Unfortunately for them, the Tigers have also won seven of their last ten.  Today, Cleveland and Detroit battle each other and if the Indians want to win this Division they will have to take this opportunity very seriously and battle as hard as they can.

Shelley Duncan made sure that the Indians did their part to stay within striking distance of the Detroit Tigers.  Duncan hit two Home Runs, a three-run shot in the sixth inning and then a two-run insurance blast in the eighth and the Indians finished off their season series with the Royals with a  much needed win, 9-6.

The Indians jumped on Royals starter Jeff Francis early in the game scoring a run on Jason Donald’s RBI single in the first inning with two outs.  Fukudome scored on the hit and Carlos Santana was thrown out trying to score a second run which ended the inning.

Last night, the Indians took a step backwards in their pursuit of the Central Division crown.  It didn’t help that the Tigers came back in dramatic fashion to beat the White Sox in walk-off fashion.  Today, the Indians will have to win so they don’t lose any more ground in the division with the Tigers coming to Cleveland tomorrow.
