Sandy Alomar ties a Major League record with four doubles in one game as Cleveland defeats the Red Sox in Boston, 7-3.
Alomar is perfect at the plate for the Tribe and contributed several runs while nearly adding a couple more. Already up 1-0 in the second, Alomar doubled to left to chase Manny Ramirez home after he reached on an error and stole second. The catcher scored two pitches later on a double by Casey Candaele.
Alomar doubled again to left off of starter Tom Gordon to lead off the fourth and scored on a single by Candaele to give the Indians a 5-0 lead. One inning later against reliever Mark Brandenburg, his third double to left, this time with two outs, moved Ramirez to third, but the pair would be stranded. In the eighth against Heathcliff Slocumb, he lined a double down the line in left to move Ramirez to third again, but he would be left at second at the inning’s end.
It was the third and final four-hit game of the season for Alomar, who hit a career-high .324 on the season.
