Cleveland Blues pitcher Earl Moore throws nine hitless innings, but loses the no-hitter and the ball game in the tenth inning.
Moore, a rookie purchased for $1,000 by the Blues from Dayton whom debuted two weeks earlier, gave up a pair of unearned runs to the Chicago White Sox through the first nine innings. The Blues scored two runs of their own in the third inning.
Coming out for the tenth, Chicago’s Sam Mertes and Fred “Dutch” Hartman each singled off of the “Steam Engine in Boots” to end his no-hitter, which would have been the first in Cleveland franchise history. Two runs scored in the inning and the Sox claimed a 4-2 win in front of a small League Park crowd limited by inclement weather.
It will not be until 1908 that the Cleveland franchise notches their first no-hitter, when Bob Rhoads becomes the first to accomplish the feat. Addie Joss will toss a perfect game just two weeks later.
