The Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers engage in a little in-season Home Run Derby as the two clubs combine for eleven home runs to match a Major League nine-inning record. The Indians get eight of the blasts to power their way to an 11-4 win over the Brewers at Milwaukee’s County Stadium.

Matt Williams, who entered the game with one home run on the year in his first season as the Indians third baseman, cleared the fence three times while driving in four runs. David Justice hit a pair to give him six on the season and Manny Ramirez, Chad Curtis, and Sandy Alomar each left the yard.

The first place Indians won their third straight, providing starting pitcher Orel Hershiser with all of the support he would need on the night. He gave up all three of the Brewers’ home runs, allowing a two-run shot to DH John Jaha, a solo shot to the next batter, former Indians outfielder Jeromy Burnitz, and a solo shot to Dave Nilsson in the sixth.

Williams would not be done, as he will hit a pair of home runs the very next night while driving in four more runs. For good measure, he will add another shot three days later. He will finish the season with 32 home runs and 105 RBI in his first and only season in Cleveland and in the American League.
