Phil Seghi, general manager of the Cleveland Indians for much of the 1970s and 1980s, is born in Cedar Point, Illinois.

A former minor leaguer and a veteran of the Army during World War II, Seghi got into scouting and front office work with the Cincinnati Reds and then the Oakland Athletics after time as a minor league manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Indians. He reunited with longtime associate Gabe Paul in Cleveland in 1972, serving as the Indians’ farm director and assistant general manager before taking over Paul’s general manager position in 1973. He held the title with the Indians through the 1985 season.

Seghi died in 1987. His son Mike remains an employee of the Indians front office as the travelling secretary (the Director of Team Travel), a role he has had with the club since 1975.
