The Indians make a pair of trades to try to bolster their roster after falling just short of the playoffs in 2005, making transactions with the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cleveland sends catcher Josh Bard, outfielder Coco Crisp, and reliever David Riske to Boston for catcher Kelly Shoppach, reliever Guillermo Mota, third base prospect Andy Marte, and minor league pitcher Randy Newsom, who would be sent in July as the player to be named later. In the other trade of the day, the Indians moved reliever Arthur Rhodes to the Phillies for outfielder Jason Michaels.

It was a move intended to build for the present and the future. The Indians parted with Crisp, who was believed to be entering the prime of his career after working well for Cleveland as a center fielder and number two hitter, but was thought to help Boston more as a leadoff guy and their new center fielder.

The key return for the Indians was to be Marte, the 22-year-old top prospect.

“In Andy Marte, we are acquiring a right-handed power hitter who is also a good defensive third baseman,” general manager Mark Shapiro said following the trade. “It is difficult to acquire a player of Andy’s caliber and skill set via trade or free agency, and third base is a position of need in our organization.”
