Future Cleveland Indians player and manager George Strickland is born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Strickland spent parts of ten seasons in the Major Leagues, debuting with Pittsburgh in 1950. The middle infielder came to Cleveland in an August trade in 1952 and remained with the club into the 1960 season.
Following his career, he worked for the Indians, seeing time as a third base coach. He also spent two stints as an interim manager for the team, replacing Birdie Tebbetts at the beginning of the 1964 season after Tebbetts suffered a heart attack. After the Indians started 33-39, Tebbetts returned to his role. Strickland again took over for Tebbetts when he was relieved of his duties in August of 1966. Strickland finished that season 15-24.
He died in 2010.
