Former Cleveland Indians reliever Cody Allen is born in Orlando, Florida.

The Indians’ 23rd round pick in the 2011 amateur draft debuted just one year, one month, and five days after signing with the club after skyrocketing through the minor league system, becoming the first member of his draft class to debut for the Indians.

After earning a 3.72 ERA in 27 games in his debut year of 2012, he improved to 6-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 77 games in 2013. In 2014, he took over the closer’s role from John Axford early in the season and finished the year 6-4 with 24 saves and a 2.07 ERA in 76 games. He led the American League in games finished in 2015 with 58 and appeared in 70 games in total, earning a 2-5 record with a career-high 34 saves while posting a 2.99 ERA and striking out 99.

He worked in 67 games for the club in 2016, posting a 3-5 record with a 2.51 ERA and 32 saves in 35 opportunities while being a key cog in the Tribe’s postseason bullpen. He was nearly lights out in the playoffs, throwing 13 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball with 24 strikeouts in ten games across the ALDS, ALCS, and World Series.

Allen was once again on a playoff Indians club in 2017, saving 30 games in 69 total appearances with a 3-7 record and a 2.94 ERA. He suffered the worst season of his career in his final year under contract with the Indians in 2018, going 4-6 with a 4.70 ERA in 70 games while saving 27 games in 32 opportunities. He allowed six runs in an inning of work over two postseason appearances against the Houston Astros in the ALDS.
