The World Series begins from Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida, where the National League champion Florida Marlins host the Cleveland Indians and defeat them by a 7-4 final.
Florida’s Livan Hernandez got the better of veteran Orel Hershiser in front of more than 67,000 fans. Hernandez won his third game of the postseason, while Hershiser was tagged for seven runs on six hits and four walks in four and one-third innings.
The Indians scored the first run of the World Series in the first on an RBI-single from David Justice, but that score would last only until the bottom of the third when Edgar Renteria grounded home Craig Counsell to tie the game. Back-to-back home runs in the fourth from Moises Alou and Charles Johnson plated four runs to open the game up.
Manny Ramirez would hit a solo shot in the fifth and Jim Thome would do the same in the sixth, but Cleveland pitching could not slow down Florida, which tacked on two more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single from Jeff Conine off of Hershiser and a wild pitch by Jeff Juden on a walk to Johnson that scored Bobby Bonilla from third.
Cleveland’s Brian Giles delivered an RBI-double in the eighth, but it was too little, too late in Game 1.
