The Indians and Brewers match up on a major seven-player deal and Cleveland also engages in a three-player swap with Pittsburgh on a busy trading day for the club.

Cleveland received pitchers Bob Wickman, Steve Woodard, and Jason Bere in the deal with Milwaukee. They dealt first baseman Richie Sexson, pitchers Kane Davis and Paul Rigdon, and a player to be named later that would become Marco Scutaro on August 30.

The deal is often considered one of the top deadline deals in Brewers history, as it netted them a prolific power hitter in Sexson, who twice hit 45 homers for the club. The Indians did not completely lose out in the trade, as Wickman stabilized the bullpen and would eventually become the team’s all-time saves leader.

The Indians also re-acquired Wil Cordero for infielder Enrique Wilson and outfielder Alex Ramirez. Cordero had been with the club in 1999 but signed with Pittsburgh in the offseason. His 16 homers with the Pirates that season did not translate back into the American League, where he would hit just four more with Cleveland over parts of three seasons back with the club.
