The Cleveland Indians sign free agent utility man Terry Francona.

After five seasons in Montreal and one in Chicago with the Cubs, Francona spent his seventh season in the National League with the Cincinnati Reds in 1987, hitting .227 in 102 games while playing first base and the corner outfield spots. His signing with the Indians made him a second generation player in Cleveland, following in the footsteps of his father, journeyman Tito Francona, who played six years with the Indians from 1959 to 1964.

The younger Francona split his season between Triple-A Colorado Springs and the big league club in ’88. For the Tribe, he hit .311 in 62 games of action with a home run, eight doubles, and a dozen runs batted in. With Colorado Springs, he hit .323 in 68 games with 15 doubles and 32 RBI.

He was granted his free agency following the season and spent parts of two more seasons in the Majors with the Milwaukee Brewers and one in the minors in 1990 with the St. Louis Cardinals before getting into coaching.
