Despite having to patch together their pitching staff after a quick exit from starter Mike Garcia, the Cleveland Indians come just one out away from their first combined no-hitter as they hold off the Chicago White Sox, 2-1, in front of a holiday crowd of 26,842 at Cleveland Stadium.

Early Wynn, a starting pitcher who replaced reliever Ray Narleski after his leadoff walk to Sherm Lollar in the eighth, retired each of the first two batters in the ninth before former Indians outfielder Minnie Minoso singled to center to end the no-hitter. The potential tying run, Minoso, was caught stealing at second base, thrown out by catcher Jim Hegan, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement with Wynn in the eighth.

Garcia started the day by retiring four straight batters before exiting in the top of the second inning with a broken blood vessel in the middle finger of his pitching hand. Narleski took over and picked up where Garcia left off by throwing five and two-thirds innings of hitless baseball. He struck out five and walked a pair, allowing just an unearned run in the top of the eighth on a two-out throwing error by first baseman Bill Glynn.

Larry Doby provided all of the offense for the Indians on the day, delivering a one-out single in the fourth to score Glynn with the game’s first run. He hit a solo homer to lead off the sixth. Both runs came off of Chicago starter Bob Keegan.

Garcia will return three days later and earn a win over Baltimore. He was coming off of a complete game, four-hit shutout over the Orioles in his previous outing on June 30 before the short effort on the holiday.
