Countdown to Opening Day – 6 days

After two and a half years with the Indians, Brandon Guyer’s time in the number six in Cleveland came to a close at the end of October when his contract option was declined for the 2019 season. The bad news continued on Friday, when he was granted his release from the Chicago White Sox after being informed that he would not break camp with the big league club.

Guyer did not have a good showing in the spring with the Sox, going 5-for-23 (.217) with eight strikeouts in 28 total plate appearances. As he is prone to do, he did manage to get plunked by three pitches.

The 33-year-old struggled in his third season in an Indians uniform a season ago. He appeared in 103 games, the second-highest total of his seven-year career. He hit .206 with a .300 on-base percentage and a .371 slugging mark with eleven doubles, seven homers, and 27 RBI while serving in a platoon role in the outfield (and once on the mound in garbage time). Unlike some of his more successful seasons of his career, Guyer was not high on the leaderboard in being hit by pitches, a unique niche that had earned him some attention and the nickname “Human Piñata”. He led the American League in the stat with 24 in 2015 and had 31 combined between his time with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Indians in 2016 to lead all of baseball.

Despite already staring down the likelihood of significant outfield losses with Michael Brantley, Melky Cabrera, Lonnie Chisenhall, and Rajai Davis all becoming free agents after the 2018 season, the Indians did not see Guyer as a fit for the club for 2019 and instead declined his $3 million option, paying him a buyout of $250,000 at the end of October.

He will hope to find a new deal around baseball, but will likely be looking for a minor league pact to reestablish his value after some lean years at the plate (some of which were injury induced).

Mike Freeman wore the number six in Tribe camp this spring, but he was informed that he would not be on the Opening Day roster on March 17 and was reassigned to minor league camp. The 31-year-old was unable to win a spot on the 25-man roster as a utility man after appearing in just five games, hitting .222 (2-for-9) with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored.

Drafted by Arizona in 2010, Freeman appeared in eight games for the Diamondbacks in 2016 and 13 more games with the Seattle Mariners. He played in 16 games for the club in 2017, four with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and 15 with the Chicago Cubs. He spent the bulk of last season in the minors for the Cubs, getting just one big league plate appearance (a sacrifice bunt).

He still could factor into the big league picture at some point, as Francisco Lindor is expected to open the year on the injured list and Jason Kipnis could find himself in a similar position after suffering a mild right calf strain.

Other notable 6s in Tribe history (37 in total): Lew Fonseca (the first in 1929), Johnny Hodapp (1930), Joe Vosmik (1931-36), Ray Mack (1939-43), Bob Lemon (1946), Ken Keltner (1947-49), Minnie Minoso (1951), Larry Doby (1953), Rocky Colavito (1958-59), Harvey Kuenn (1960), Joe Azcue (1963-69), Jim Thome (1991), Lou Marson (2011-13).
