Cleveland gets an impressive day at the plate from second baseman Bobby Avila as the Indians knock off the Boston Red Sox, 14-8.

Avila was the star of the day, establishing a new team record with 15 total bases in the contest. He wasted no time getting his day started at the plate, as he homered off of Bill Wight as the second batter of the game and to start the scoring in a six-run first inning, one that he later ended with a pop up to second. He singled in the fourth and doubled and scored in the sixth to make it a 9-6 lead. He hit a two-out, two-run homer off of Ellis Kinder in the top of the seventh and homered again to lead off the ninth inning against Paul Hinrichs.

Early Wynn (5-8, 4.01 ERA) was the lone Indians pitcher of the day, allowing eight runs on 15 hits in his complete game victory. Six different Red Sox pitchers took the mound, with only one (Walt Masterson) leaving his outing without giving up at least one run.

Avila’s day at his plate extended his hitting streak to five games, the second such streak of the month for him and the fourth time to that point that season that he had hit in at least five straight. His total base record would stand until 1959, when Rocky Colavito hit four home runs against Baltimore.
