Future American League Rookie of the Year Chris Chambliss is born in Dayton, Ohio.

Chambliss earned that top rookie honor in his first season in the Majors in 1971 after being drafted with the first overall pick by the Cleveland Indians in the 1970 draft. The first baseman hit .275 in 111 games that season with 20 doubles, nine home runs, and 48 runs batted in.

After three seasons with the Indians, he was dealt to the New York Yankees early in the 1974 season in a seven-player transaction. He joined Dick Tidrow and Cecil Upshaw in relocating to New York, while Fred Beene, Tom Buskey, Steve Kline, and Fritz Peterson came to Cleveland.

He spent six seasons in the Big Apple, making an All-Star appearance in 1976 while playing in three consecutive World Series from 1976 to 1978. He was traded after the 1979 season to Toronto, who in turn flipped him to Atlanta one month later. He played seven seasons with the Braves before missing all of the 1988 season. He played in just one game in the 1989 season after rejoining the Yankees and struck out in his lone plate appearance.
