Kerby Farrell is named the new Cleveland Indians manager, replacing the successful Al Lopez in the Tribe dugout.

Farrell played parts of two seasons with the Boston Braves and Chicago White Sox before entering the coaching ranks. He was a manager in the Indians minor league system for ten seasons before his Major League opportunity, frequently posting winning records during his work on the farm.

With the Indians in 1957, he led the club to a 76-77 record and a sixth place finish and was replaced for the 1958 season by Bobby Bragan, who had an even shorter stay in the Cleveland dugout. Farrell never again managed at the Major League level, but did receive minor league coaching opportunities from Philadelphia, the New York Mets, the White Sox, and the Minnesota Twins.

In six seasons at the helm of the Indians, Lopez never finished worse than second in the American League and claimed the 1954 AL Pennant.
