Corey Kluber edges out Seattle’s Felix Hernandez and is named the American League Cy Young Award winner for the 2014 season.

In his first full season in the Majors and his fourth overall, Kluber won a league-high 18 games versus nine losses in 34 starts. He posted a 2.44 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP with three complete games and one shutout. He struck out 269 batters in 235 2/3 innings and led all AL pitchers with a 7.4 WAR for the year.

Kluber received 169 vote points, including 17 for first place.

Hernandez went 15-6 with a 2.14 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in 34 starts for the Mariners. He struck out 248 batters in 236 innings and had a WAR of 6.8. He earned 159 vote points, including 13 for first place.

Kluber won the award one year to the day that his manager, Terry Francona, was named the AL Manager of the Year for the 2013 season. He became just the fourth winner of the award in franchise history, joining Gaylord Perry, CC Sabathia, and Cliff Lee, and is the third to do since 2007.
