Cleveland Indians catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. is announced as the unanimous winner of the American League Rookie of the Year Award.
Alomar became just the third player to be elected by a unanimous vote (Carlton Fisk, Mark McGwire). He hit .290 in his first season in Cleveland with nine home runs and 66 RBI. He was voted to his first of three straight Midsummer Classic starts during the season.
He is the first Indians rookie to be honored with the award since Joe Charboneau in 1980 and just the fourth in club history (Herb Score in 1955; Chris Chambliss in 1971). Alomar remains the most recent winner of the award in Cleveland.
