The 2007 season comes to a shocking and heartbreaking end for the Cleveland Indians as they lose their third straight ALCS game and are eliminated from the postseason by the Boston Red Sox in an 11-2 shellacking at Fenway Park.

The losses all came after the Indians took what appeared to be a commanding 3-1 lead in the series.

Boston scored single runs in each of the first three innings off of Indians starter Jake Westbrook before Cleveland chipped back with a pair in the fourth and fifth. Ryan Garko’s two-out double scored Travis Hafner, who had reached on his own double, to make it a 3-1 game. Three straight singles in the fifth by Kenny Lofton, Franklin Gutierrez, and Casey Blake led to a sacrifice fly from Grady Sizemore to pull the Indians within one.

The Indians missed an opportunity in the seventh when the still-speedy Lofton was held at third base by coach Joel Skinner on a single to left by Gutierrez. He would not score as Blake grounded into a double play and the Red Sox responded with two in the bottom of the inning on a Dustin Pedroia home run and six in the eighth for the dagger, including a bases loaded double from Pedroia off of Rafael Betancourt.

The Red Sox will proceed to sweep the Colorado Rockies in four games in the World Series.

October 21st is a bad day in general in Indians history, as the team lost their lone two games played on this date in the World Series – 3-2 in Game 1 of the 1995 championship to the Atlanta Braves and 14-11 in Game 3 of the 1997 series to the Florida Marlins.
