Proving that the regular season means nothing in the playoffs, Cleveland’s Bartolo Colon and Bob Wickman combine on a 5-0 six-hit shutout in Seattle against the Mariners, who won 116 games during the season.
The win gives the Indians a 1-0 lead in the American League Division Series. Colon allowed all six of the hits in the game in addition to a pair of walks over eight scoreless innings while striking out ten.
The Tribe plated three in the fourth off of Freddy Garcia on RBI singles by Juan Gonzalez, Travis Fryman, and Marty Cordova. Roberto Alomar led off the inning with a double and scored on the single from Gonzalez. After a walk by Jim Thome and a single by Ellis Burks to load the bases, Fryman singled home Gonzalez and Cordova singled in Thome. Still with nobody out in the inning, Einar Diaz and Kenny Lofton struck out and Omar Vizquel, the ninth man to bat, flew out to left to leave the bases loaded.
Diaz made up for his bases loaded strikeout in the sixth when he singled home Fryman to knock Garcia out of the game while making it a 4-0 game. Burks provided some thunder at the plate with a solo homer to lead off the eighth to give the game its final score.
