For the first time since 1948, the World Series comes to the city of Cleveland as the Indians, owners of the most wins in baseball this season, host New York but the Giants score early and often in a 6-2 win.

The Tribe already trailed in the series, two games to none, after a three-run walk-off homer in the opener and a 3-1 Giants win on September 30. The new location made no difference for the Tribe, as Mike Garcia is dealt the loss after allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits in three innings. Cleveland manages just four hits off of the Giants pitching tandem of Ruben Gomez and Hoyt Wilhelm.

Willie Mays drove in an unearned run in the first off of Garcia on a single to right field. In the third, New York got singles from Al Dark and Don Mueller to put runners on the corners. Mays hit one to third, but Dark was thrown out at the plate after a run down. An intentional walk to Hank Thompson loaded the bases and pinch-hitter and Indians nemesis Dusty Rhodes singled in a pair. Davey Williams reached on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error that scored the fourth run of the game.

Wes Westrum singled in Thompson in the fifth off of reliever Art Houtteman. A Mays single in the sixth off of Ray Narleski capped the Giants’ scoring.

Vic Wertz hit a solo home run to get the Indians on the board in the seventh off of Gomez. Al Smith knocked in a run on an error at short in the eighth.
