Cleveland Stadium plays host to a no-hitter as Toronto’s Dave Stieb finally stakes his claim to history with a 3-0 over the Indians.

Stieb had lost three different no-hitters with two outs in the ninth inning before he was able to get the elusive 27th out against Cleveland on this date. He allowed four walks and struck out nine, including the side twice, in earning his 17th win of the season.

A perfect game was never in question, as the righty walked Alex Cole to start the game, but erased him on a caught stealing. Carlos Baerga drew a two-out walk in the second and was removed from the bases the same way. He walked Ken Phelps to lead off the eighth, but stranded him on three fly outs. Cole walked again in the ninth with two outs, but Jerry Browne lined out to right to seal the game.

Stieb threw a pair of one-hitters in 1989 and came within one out of a no-hitter in a third game before allowing a double and single against the New York Yankees. He had three other one-hitters in 1988, including back-to-back September starts in which he took a no-hitter one out away in each, including his September 24 start against the Indians. In that game, also in Cleveland, Julio Franco broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single to center to play spoiler.

Stieb’s hitless game remains the only no-hitter thrown in the history of the Blue Jays organization, dating back to the club’s inaugural season in 1977.
