The Indians blast five home runs, including three from slugger Larry Doby, as Cleveland trounces the Washington Senators, 11-0.

Bob Lemon was masterful on the mound for the Tribe and contributed in big ways at the plate as the second place Indians improved to 61-38 and found themselves sitting just two games out of first place for manager Lou Boudreau’s club. Lemon’s complete game three-hit shutout gave him his 17th win of the season. He struck out eight and walked four in the win.

Doby started the scoring with a solo homer with two outs in the first. Joe Gordon led off the second with a solo shot. Doby homered again in his second at bat, a two-run dinger to score Boudreau to give the Indians a 4-0 lead. Again up with a runner on in the fifth, the results were the same for Doby, who cleared the wall with a two-run shot, scoring Dale Mitchell. With a chance in the seventh to homer in a fourth straight at bat, Doby drew a walk and later scored on a groundout by Bob Kennedy. Jim Hegan followed with an RBI-single, and Lemon aided his own cause with a three-run homer to erase all doubt, as the five-run frame made it an 11-0 game.

Doby would strike out in his final at bat in the ninth. In his fourth season in the Majors, he entered the game with just one multi-homer game in his career. He will go on some kind of tear over the next week, hitting another pair of homers in a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees on August 5 and two more in the first game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns on August 9.
