Progressive Field hosts its first no-hitter ever, but unfortunately, the Indians are on the losing end as the Angels’ Ervin Santana blanks them, 3-1.
Ezequiel Carrera provided the Indians’ lone run in the first, reaching on an error to start the bottom of the inning. He stole second, moved to third on an Asdrubal Cabrera groundout, and scored on a wild pitch with Travis Hafner at the plate. Santana would retire 22 straight before walking Lonnie Chisenhall with one out in the eighth.
Mike Trout tied the game at one with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning off of Indians starter David Huff. A passed ball with reliever Joe Smith on the mound gave the Angels a 2-1 lead and they added an insurance run in the top of the ninth off of closer Chris Perez on an RBI-single. In the bottom of the ninth, Travis Buck struck out looking, Carrera grounded out to second, and Michael Brantley flew out to left-center to end it.
It was the third no-hitter of the 2011 season, following a pair in May by Francisco Liriano and Justin Verlander. It was the first no-hitter against the Indians since New York’s Jim Abbott tossed one on September 4, 1993, and the first in Cleveland since Toronto’s Dave Stieb completed his on September 2, 1990.

1889 – Smoky Joe Wood, a pitcher and outfielder for the Indians on their 1920 World Championship club, is born in Kansas City, Missouri. He was purchased from the Boston Red Sox in 1917 and spent parts of six seasons with the Indians.
1923 – Ray Boone, who would spend six of his 13 Major League seasons in Cleveland, is born in San Diego, California. He is the father of future big leaguer Bob Boone and the grandfather of future Indians third baseman Aaron Boone and his brother Bret Boone.
1970 – Lou Boudreau is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
1973 – George Hendrick ends Baltimore’s Jim Palmer’s no-hitter with no outs in the eighth inning. The Indians will lose game one of the doubleheader, 9-0, but will win the second game, 5-2. Also on this day, future Indians utility guy Enrique Wilson is born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
1987 – One-time Indians reliever Preston Guilmet is born in Roseville, California.
2007 – The Indians acquire outfielder Kenny Lofton for the third time, this time receiving him from the Texas Rangers for catching prospect Max Ramirez.
2009 – Cleveland sends first baseman Ryan Garko to the San Francisco Giants for minor league pitcher Scott Barnes.
2010 – Josh Tomlin earns the win in his Major League debut, allowing three hits over seven innings in a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees.
2013 – The Indians are one of three American League teams to win today on a 1-0 final, as Justin Masterson and the bullpen defeat the Texas Rangers. It is the first time that there have been three 1-0 games on one day since September 4, 1965.
