Larry Doby hits one of the farthest shots ever at Washington’s Griffith Stadium as the Indians are victorious against the Senators, 6-1.

Gene Bearden, the returning World War II vet, made his season debut and first big league start and nearly went the distance, pitching eight and two-thirds innings before being lifted after a bases loaded walk in the ninth.

The Indians staked him to an early 1-0 lead in the first, but a five-run eighth would give him plenty of cushion. Doby capped the scoring in the inning, hitting a drive to center that hit loudspeakers 35 feet above the playing surface. Doby, thinking the ball was still in play, sprinted around the bases and scored with a slide into the plate. He was credited with his first of four career inside-the-park home runs and the blast is thought to be the longest at the park since one by Babe Ruth in 1922.

The Nats’ run in the ninth ended their streak of three consecutive shutouts. The Indians improved to 8-4 on the season.
