Cleveland Indians ace and Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber is born in Birmingham, Alabama.

Kluber was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, but was dealt to the Indians at the non-waiver trade deadline as part of a three-team deal in 2010. Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook was sent to St. Louis as part of the swap, and former Indians outfielder Ryan Ludwick moved from the Cardinals to the Padres. Minor league pitcher Nick Greenwood, who made his Major League debut in 2014, was also relocated from the Padres to the Cardinals organization.

Kluber appeared in three games for the Indians in 2011 and another 12 in 2012 before he settled in to a more regular role with the club in 2013. After an 11-5 season with a 3.85 ERA in 26 games that year, he went on to become the Indians’ third Cy Young winner in the last eight years and their fourth since the award was created, posting a league-high 18 wins in 34 starts with a 2.44 ERA in 235 2/3 innings of work that season. After leading the league in losses and complete games in 2015, he made his first All-Star team and finished third in the Cy Young voting in 2016 behind another 18-9 season.
