Ted Uhlaender, former Cleveland Indians outfielder and first base coach, passes away after a heart attack at his home in Atwood, Kansas. He was 68 years old.
Uhlaender debuted with the Minnesota Twins in 1965 and spent his first five seasons with the club until he was traded with Dean Chance, Bob Miller, and Graig Nettles to Cleveland for pitchers Luis Tiant and Stan Williams following the 1969 season. He spent a pair of seasons with the Tribe, hitting a career-high eleven home runs in 1971, before he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for pitcher Milt Wilcox at the end of the year.
He took time away from professional baseball, returning to the game in 1989 as a minor league coach, scout, and special assistant. He was the Indians’ first base coach in 2000 and 2001 before moving back to the San Francisco Giants, where he previously worked in the front office.
