The Cleveland Indians send slugging third baseman Matt Williams back out west, as he is dealt to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for third baseman Travis Fryman, reliever Tom Martin, and $3 million.

Williams was both a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner in his only season in Cleveland. He batted .263 over the course of the year with 32 home runs and 105 RBI for an Indians team that fell just one victory short of a championship. He had been acquired the previous offseason from the San Francisco Giants, where the former third overall pick of the 1986 draft had spent his first ten Major League seasons while being named to four NL All-Star teams.

For Fryman, it marked the second time he was traded in less than two weeks. He was shipped to Arizona from the Detroit Tigers on November 18. He will hit .287 in his first season with the Indians with 28 homers and 96 RBI and will play five seasons in total in Cleveland.

The left-hander Martin had just been drafted by Arizona in the expansion draft. He will spend parts of three seasons with the Indians, seeing little action in his first two years with the club.
