At the cost of $40,000 and a pair of players, Cleveland general manager Billy Evans acquires outfielder Earl Averill from the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League.

“The Earl of Snohomish” will spend parts of the next eleven seasons in an Indians uniform, homering in his first Major League at bat and later making six straight All-Star teams from 1933 to 1938. He hit as high as .378 during the 1936 season, when he also led the American League in hits and triples. He had a pair of 200-hit seasons, scored 100 runs or more nine different times, and reached the 30-homer plateau in three different seasons.

The left-handed hitting center fielder concluded his Major League career in 1941 with the Boston Braves after a stop with the Detroit Tigers.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975 and had his jersey number three retired by the Indians that same year. He remains at the top of the offensive leaderboard for a number of statistics in Indians franchise history.
