The Indians come back from a 3-1 deficit with a seven-run eighth inning, capped by a bases loaded single from Sandy Alomar in an 8-3 win for Cleveland over the White Sox in Chicago on the day the club retired Carlton Fisk’s number 72.

The White Sox scored a pair of single runs in the first two innings off of Bartolo Colon, who settled down for six innings on the mound before handing it off to the bullpen. The Indians had managed just two hits against Chicago’s Jaime Navarro and their bullpen through the seventh inning before stumbling into some good fortunes.

Tony Castillo gave up a single to Omar Vizquel. Pinch-hitter Jeff Manto struck out. Richie Sexson, pinch-hitting for Brian Giles, singled weakly to third. Jeff Darwin took over on the mound and gave up a single to Manny Ramirez to load the bases. Tom Fordham replaced Darwin and gave up a single the opposite way to Jim Thome to make it a 2-1 game. David Justice tied it with a sacrifice fly for the second out. Reliever Keith Foulke entered and issued an intentional walk to Matt Williams without even warming up. The fifth pitcher of the inning, Matt Karchner, was called upon and gave up Alomar’s single to center to score two to give Cleveland a 4-2 lead. A single from Marquis Grissom and a two-run double from Vizquel made it a 7-2 game. Manto struck out again to end the inning.

The Indians would add another run in the ninth on Thome’s 40th homer of the season. The Sox would use nine different pitchers in a nine-inning game, including five in that eighth, to tie a Major League record.

1936 – Future Indians pitcher Stan Williams is born in Enfield, New Hampshire.

1955 – Herb Score breaks Grover Cleveland Alexander’s rookie record of 227 strikeouts in a 3-2 loss to Washington. He entered the game tied with Alexander for the record and passed the mark with his first inning K of Mickey Vernon. He would rack up nine in the game and nine more in his final outing of the year ten days later to finish the season with 245.

1972 – Future third generation Major Leaguer David Bell is born. He is the son of former Indians third baseman Buddy Bell and Cincinnati Reds star outfielder Gus Bell.

1973 – Retired scout and former MLBer Sloppy Thurston dies at the age of 74. Credited with finding future Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Thurston scouted for the Indians from 1948 to 1950.

1977 – Former Indians outfielder and third baseman Beau Bell passes away in Bryan, Texas. He was 70 years old.

1990 – Indians pitcher Cody Anderson is born in Quincy, California.
