A recently acquired prospect plays the hero for the Tribe as Zach Walters hits a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Indians defeat the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader.

The win pushes the third place Indians back over the .500 mark at 60-59 and has the club five and a half games behind the first place Detroit Tigers. The D’Backs scored a run on a double play ball in the sixth off of former Arizona top draft pick Trevor Bauer, but a two-out, two-run single by Michael Brantley in the bottom of the frame gave the Indians their first lead of the afternoon. An RBI-groundout from Aaron Hill off of Bauer in the top of the seventh tied the score at two until Walters’ shot.

There would not be another run until the 12th inning of the second game, when Tuffy Gosewisch singled to center to drive in Xavier Paul with the go-ahead run off of Indians reliever C.C. Lee.

It was just the second game for Walters in an Indians uniform after being called up from Triple-A Columbus. He was acquired on July 31st, less than two weeks earlier, from the Washington Nationals for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. He, like Bauer, was a former draft pick of the Diamondbacks.

1949 – Andre “Thunder” Thornton is born in Tuskegee, Alabama. He will spend ten of his 14 MLB seasons in Cleveland with the Indians.

1955 – The errorless streak of Larry Doby in the outfield ends an at American League record 167 games.

1966 – A controlling interest of the Indians is purchased by Vernon Stouffer, who will own the team for seven years.
