Larry Doby becomes the first player in the Majors to clear the outer wall of Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium with a home run and the Indians back left-hander Herb Score’s strong effort on the mound in a 4-2 win over the Athletics.

Doby’s shot in the sixth inning was thought to be a 500-foot blast. The homer to lead off the inning pushed the Indians lead to 3-0 at the time. He had popped up to the middle infielders in each of his first two at bats in the game and later followed with singles in the seventh and ninth innings.

Cleveland struck first in the game with a two-out, two-run triple by Bobby Avila in the third and added a fourth run after Doby’s blast in the sixth inning on an RBI-double by Sam Dente, all off of Kansas City losing pitcher Bobby Shantz.

Score lasted eight innings and had started the ninth but was lifted after giving up a pair of singles to start the frame. He allowed a homer in the bottom of the eighth to Gus Zernial, and Ray Narleski, who relieved for Score, allowed an RBI-single to future Indians All-Star and Gold Glove first baseman Vic Power, but allowed no further damage.
