Albert Belle’s 21-game hitting streak comes to an end as the slugger goes 0-for-3 in a 10-8 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

The long stretch of success at the plate established a new career high for Belle, who had previously hit in 15 straight games from August 8 to August 21, 1995. Leading off the second inning, he lined out off of Brewers starter Scott Karl, who earned the win on the day despite allowing eight earned runs. Belle walked in the fourth and hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth that cut the deficit at the time to 10-5. He grounded out to short in the seventh and had a key opportunity with runners on the corners and two outs in the ninth, but Graeme Lloyd struck him out looking on a 3-2 pitch to end it.

While his hitting streak, dating back to April 27, ended, the walk extended Belle’s consecutive on-base streak to 40 games going back to the fourth game of the season. He will continue that streak until June 2, a 50-game stretch during which he hit .354 and the Indians went 35-15.

He will establish a new best the next season, hitting in 27 straight games.
