In a rare feat in Major League Baseball, Cleveland outfielder Alex Cole steals five bases in one game. His efforts are for naught, however, as the Indians fall to the California Angels by a 6-3 final at Cleveland Stadium.

Cole becomes just the second player in MLB history (joining Eddie Collins, Philadelphia Athletics – six bases each on September 11th and 22nd of 1912) to steal five or more bases in a game twice. Cole previously was good for five thefts on the bases on August 1st, 1990. It marked just the 15th time in the modern era of baseball that one player stole at least five bases in a game.

The Indians left fielder was on base all game long, knocking singles in the first, third, fifth, and seventh innings before walking in the ninth. He stole second in the first, picked off second and third before scoring on a passed ball in the third, stole second and third before being thrown out at the plate on a 9-2 double play in the seventh, and took second base in the ninth on defensive indifference.

Note: Ten players have picked off five or more bases in a game since Cole’s day, including Kenny Lofton on September 3rd, 2000. Eric Young has joined Cole and Collins as a third player to steal five or more in a game twice.
