Playoff Scenarios Set By American League

September 24, 1948

If you were in Chicago this morning and heard something sounding like a bunch of change falling on the floor, it was just the American League determining home field for all their playoff scenarios.

Representatives from the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees met in Chicago at the office of Will Harridge, American League president, to determine home field if teams end the season in a tie for first place. Currently, the Indians and Red Sox are tied atop the standings and the Yankees are just a game behind. All three teams have eight games remaining on the regular season schedule.

Playoff games will be played on October 4 and 5, with the World Series slated to begin in the National League city on October 6. Any one-game playoff will be played October 4, with a three-way tie playoff needing both days to settle the deadlock.

Possible playoff results:

  1. If Cleveland ties Boston, the playoff will be in Boston, on Monday, October 4.
  2. If Cleveland ties New York, the playoff will be in New York on October 4.
  3. If Boston ties New York, the playoff will be in New York on October 4.
  4. If the three teams tie, Cleveland and Boston will play in Boston on October 4 and the winner will meet New York on October 5 on the home grounds of the winning team.

It appears New York won the coin-toss ceremony this morning as they will be the home site of any two-team playoff and have to play just one game in a three-team playoff.
