Cleveland Browns to Shift Game if Tribe Makes Series

August 9, 1948

If the Cleveland Indians finish their outstanding season by winning the American League pennant, they might not have a stadium to play their World Series in.

Currently, the Cleveland Browns, the town’s football team, has a game scheduled on October 10 against the Brooklyn Dodgers football team. The Tribe is currently tied for the lead in the American League and could very easily have a World Series game that day in Cleveland. Ironically, the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team is just four and a half games behind the Boston Braves in the National League.

If the Indians do have a World Series game in Cleveland on October 10, the Browns will reschedule their football game at the stadium from Sunday to Tuesday night, October 12. Representatives from both teams and Emil Bossard – the Tribe’s groundskeeper – will meet tomorrow morning in the office of Paul Hurd, stadium commissioner, to discuss the conflicting dates and use of the Stadium during the Tribe’s pennant chase in September.

The Browns open their season here Friday night, September 3, playing Los Angeles and oppose Chicago at the stadium, Sunday, September 26. The Indians are out of town on both dates, but return two or three days later in each case. The Indians have concerns about how the diamond will be affected by the two football games during a tight pennant race.

“If it doesn’t rain it would be just a matter of replacing the divots,” Bossard said.

He believes the Stadium is in such good shape that if it does not rain heavily, the football games should not cause any considerable damage.
