Future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton is born in Miami, Florida.

“Lefty” was already a four-time Cy Young Award winner and a ten-time All-Star when he made his way to Cleveland at the start of the 1987 season at the age of 42. A former six-time 20+ game winner, Carlton was a shell of his former self after spending the previous season with three different clubs.

He would go 5-9 with the Indians in 1987, earning a 5.37 ERA in 23 games, before being traded to Minnesota at the end of July for a player to be named. Pitcher Jeff Perry would be sent by the Twins a couple of weeks later, but he spent just three games with the Indians in Double-A before moving on to the Angels organization.

Carlton was released by the Twins in December of 1987 but re-signed with the club a month later. After appearing in four unsuccessful games to start the 1988 season, going 0-1 with an 16.76 ERA, he was released.

After his career that spanned 24 seasons, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994.
