The Cleveland Indians add a pair of players in a five-player swap with the Washington Senators, acquiring pitcher Early Wynn and first baseman Mickey Vernon for pitchers Joe Haynes and Ed Klieman and first baseman Eddie Robinson.
Wynn, the eight-year veteran, was coming off a disastrous 8-19 season for the Senators in 1948 with a 5.82 ERA and a league-high 128 earned runs allowed. He found his form again in Cleveland though, eventually winning 20 games in four separate seasons, including his 23 for the AL Pennant winning Tribe in 1954. He will join the White Sox in December of 1957 in a trade, but will return to Cleveland midway through the 1963 season, winning his 300th game in the uniform in which he saw his best seasons.
Vernon will have one of the best seasons of his career to that point, batting .291 with a career-high 18 home runs and 83 RBI while playing 153 games. He will be traded back to Washington during the next season after a .189 start through 28 games of the 1950 season. He will return to Cleveland again in 1958, making his seventh and final All-Star game appearance at the age of 40.
