The Cleveland Indians sign free agent and All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar on a four year tender worth between $30 and $32 million.
Alomar, who spent the last three seasons in Baltimore with the Orioles, will be reunited with his brother Sandy in Cleveland. The two had previously played together while members of the San Diego Padres in 1988 and 1989.
After spending three seasons with the Padres and making his first All-Star appearance in 1990, he was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays with Joe Carter for Tony Fernandez and Fred McGriff. There, he helped guide the Blue Jays to the postseason three straight years, including back-to-back World Series victories and a World Series MVP award in 1992. He spent five years with the Jays before signing with the Baltimore Orioles, where he extended his consecutive All-Star teams named to streak to nine years.
The new and younger Alomar will bat .323 over the next three years for the Tribe, finishing a run of 12 consecutive All-Star appearances. He will establish new career highs in batting average (.336), home runs (24), and RBI (120) during his stay in Cleveland, twice finishing in the top four of the AL MVP voting.
