1939 – In front of a reported crowd of 500 at Griffith Stadium, the Cleveland Indians pull off a triple play in the fifth inning. It does not help their final score, however, as despite rallying to tie the game in the ninth, they fall 10-9 to the Washington Senators.

In the fifth inning, the Senators saw each of their first five batters reach base safely. The sixth man up for Washington, pitcher Early Wynn, popped up a bunt towards third baseman Ken Keltner, who was reported to have dropped the pop on purpose and threw to Lou Boudreau covering second. The future Tribe Hall of Famer tagged Mickey Vernon, the lead runner, before throwing to Oscar Grimes, who tagged Al Evans and stepped on first to retire Wynn, who was still standing down at home plate.

As luck would have it for Washington, this triple play would not be the final one of the season. The poor Senators were struck once again at home just five days later in the seventh inning of a game against the New York Yankees.
