Corey Kluber struck out 18 Cardinals over eight innings on Wednesday night to send the Indians to a 2-0 victory over St. Louis. Kluber had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning before Jhonny Peralta snuck a base hit past shortstop. After 113 pitches, Kluber was removed from the game and not allowed to pitch the ninth inning. Had Kluber pitched the ninth inning, he could have tied or passed the all-time record (20) for strikeouts in a nine inning game, held by Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson.
Instead, Kluber will have to settle for 18 strikeouts, tying the all-time Indians record, held by Luis Tiant, set in 1968.
