A tragic boating accident that hours earlier claimed the life of young Indians reliever Steve Olin took a second casualty, as reliever Tim Crews succumbed to his injuries sustained when his bass boat struck a dock on Little Lake Nellie on an off day for the club during their spring training work at Winter Haven, Florida. Crews was 31 years old.

The 27-year-old Olin (left) died instantly from his injuries on the night of the 22nd. Crews (center), less than two weeks short of his 32nd birthday, had suffered a serious brain injury as well as an injured lung and was pronounced dead in the early morning of the 23rd. Another passenger in the boat, 35-year-old teammate Bobby Ojeda (right), suffered a severely lacerated scalp and lost four pints of blood from his wound, but would recover and eventually return to the mound after a lengthy rehab.

The pair were the first active baseball players to die since New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson was lost in a small plane crash in 1979.
