Gaylord Perry, the Cleveland Indians’ first Cy Young Award winning pitcher, is elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Perry will be joined in induction by a fellow 300-game winner, Ferguson Jenkins, and a member of the 3,000-hit club, Rod Carew.
Perry spent ten seasons with the San Francisco Giants before he was traded to Cleveland in November of 1971 with Frank Duffy for Sam McDowell. Perry was an immediate success with the Tribe, winning the Cy Young in his first season with the club while posting a 24-16 record, a 1.92 EA, and throwing 29 complete games. He would spend parts of just four seasons with the Indians before being dealt to the Texas Rangers. He later would win another Cy Young Award in 1978 with the National League’s San Diego Padres at the age of 40.
