Second baseman Roberto Alomar, a 12-time All-Star and ten-time Gold Glove winner, is traded by the Indians to the New York Mets in an eight-player deal between the two clubs.
Alomar hit .336 during the 2001 season for Cleveland while hitting 34 doubles, 12 triples, and 20 home runs, stealing 30 bases, and driving in 100 runs. He was joined in the deal by minor league first baseman/outfielder Danny Peoples and pitcher Mike Bacsik.
Coming to Cleveland were veteran outfielder Matt Lawton and a pile of prospects, none of whom ever lived up to their expectations. The Indians received outfielder Alex Escobar, first baseman Earl Snyder, and pitchers Jerrod Riggan and Billy Traber.
The 30-year-old Lawton spent three seasons in Cleveland as a corner outfielder, making his second All-Star team in 2004.
