After coming over from the Boston Red Sox, spitball pitcher Ray Caldwell makes his debut with the Indians allowing only four hits and one run to earn his 8th win of the season. However, the bizarre sidenote to this game was the fact that Caldwell was flattened by a bolt of lightning in the ninth inning. Remarkably, despite being knocked unconscious, he refused to leave the game because he wanted to earn the complete game victory. He was able to get the final out of the game to “earn” the victory over Philadelphia 2-1.
