Offensive Outburst Makes Francona Homecoming Easy; Indians 12, Red Sox 3

Homecoming games are usually easy victories for the home team. However, this homecoming was easy for the visiting team.

The Indians struck early and often and used a six-run sixth inning to pace themselves to a 12-3 victory, taking the first game of a four game series in Boston. The win was the first for Indians manager Terry Francona since his eight year tenure as skipper of the Red Sox ended two years ago. Zach McAllister turned in another solid start, controlling Boston with the exception of one pitch.

Rally Falls a Few Drops Short; Tigers 11, Indians 7

In what amounted to a rain-drenched slugfest, the Tigers left town with a two game sweep after an 11-7 win over the Indians Wednesday evening.

The Tigers kicked off the first with some quick lighting when Andy Dirks led off the game with a single to center. Dirks stole second before Torii Hunter laced a single to left putting two on and no out. Of course, the big man Miguel Cabrera stood in next and shot a double to left driving in Dirks and moving Hunter to third. Jimenez managed to keep the runners in place with a line out by Prince Fielder to short before Victor Martinez shot a sac fly to right scoring Hunter putting the Tigers up 2-0. Jimenez finished off Johnny Peralta with a strikeout ending the inning.

Scherzer Snaps Tribe’s Streak; Tigers 5, Indians 1

The Indians bats were dominated by Detroit pitcher Max Scherzer (6-0) on Tuesday night, as the Tribe breaks their five game winning streak by dropping their contest with the Tigers by a score of 5-1.

The Indians came into the game as the hottest team in baseball, going 18-4 since April 28 while averaging 5.9 runs per game with a .286 team batting average.  Scherzer put a hold on the Tribe’s hot bats and all of those numbers for the evening.

The Detroit right hander was outstanding after allowing an early run in the first inning.  He set down 22 straight Indians from the first inning through the eighth, using pinpoint control and a mid-90’s fastball.  For the game, Scherzer pitched eight innings allowing one run on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Gomes Walkoff Gives Tribe Sweep; Indians 10, Mariners 8

Monday afternoon’s game between the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners was reminiscent of a boxing match. Both sides took turns absorbing the other’s best shots, but would not stay down for the count.

Finally, in a back-and-forth affair, it was Yan Gomes who delivered the knockout punch. A 10^th inning, three-run home run, erased an 8-7 deficit and gave the Tribe a 10-8 win. It was Gomes’ second longball of the day and fourth of the season. The comeback victory completed a four-game sweep over the Mariners and gave Cleveland its fifth straight win. At 26-17 the Indians are now two and a half games up in the AL Central Division over the Tigers, who visit Progressive Field on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A count of 19,390 fans witnessed the Indians’ third walk-off home run of the year and third walk-off victory during the four-game tilt with Seattle. Gomes’ blast was the sixth time on the day a team had a lead erased. Seattle had the lead to start both the ninth and tenth innings. Read More

Masterson Strikes Out 11 as Tribe Defeats Yet Another Cy Young Winner; Indians 6, Mariners 0

Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners had the Indians once again proving that Cy Young winners do nothing to intimidate their team. Following their 6-0 win, the Indians have now beat seven out of the eight Cy Young pitchers they have faced since the beginning of the season.

The Indians strong offense at the game’s beginning, coupled with Masterson’s strong outing which brought him to a straight 19 scoreless innings, brought the Tribe to 3-0 in the series against the Mariners and defeated their ace, Felix Hernandez.

Reynolds Saves Game with Second Straight Walkoff Win; Indians 5, Mariners 4

Walk-off victories are kind of becoming a thing again at Progressive Field.

Saturday afternoon the Tribe squandered an early 4-0 lead and strong pitching performance from Zach McAllister to blow the lead in the top of the ninth and walk off with another bottom of the ninth inning victory, winning 5-4. It was the second victory in as many days in the Tribe’s final at bat.

Tribe Runs Away to Day Time Split of Series; Indians 10, Phillies 4

After a couple games in a row where the Indians pitching staff has pitched well with no help from the offense, the bats finally woke up one Wednesday. The Indians were able to win the game 10-4 with the help of three home runs, a solo shot from Mike Aviles, a two run home run from Nick Swisher and a three run blast to extend the lead off the bat of Jason Kipnis. The pitching was also strong to keep the Phillies bats in check with Corey Kluber going six innings, giving up six hits, three runs but no walks and striking out five.

The first and second innings were quiet from both teams, as no runs were scored despite the Tribe getting Ryan Raburn and Mike Aviles on base with two outs. Kluber flied out on a very strong at bat for a pitcher, making Cole Hamels throw eight pitches.

Late Inning Lapse Sends Tribe to Split; Yankees 7, Indians 0

No brooms were needed at Progressive Field after 18 innings on Monday afternoon.

Despite a 1-0 win in the first game, the Tribe could not muster any offense in the second game and New York took the second game 7-0. Trevor Bauer battled the Yankees into the seventh inning—in what might be his best start with the Tribe—but the bullpen, poor defense and a quiet offense was too much to overcome.

Masterson Splendid in Shutting Out Yankees; Indians 1, Yankees 0

A first inning solo home run off the bat of Jason Kipnis was the only run the Indians would score in Game 1 of their doubleheader with the New York Yankees. The one tally was the only score the Tribe would need as ace Justin Masterson carved up the visitors for a complete game shutout.

Masterson struck out nine Yankee hitters while walking just three en route to a 1-0 Indians win. Cleveland improved to 21-15 and is now a half game ahead of Detroit in the American League Central Division. Read More

Tribe Takes Series in Extras With Late Rallies; Indians 4, Tigers 3

The Indians looked to gain a series victory against the Detroit Tigers on Mother’s Day. On the hill for the Tribe was Zach McAllister (3-3, 2.63) who was opposed by Rick Porcello (1-2, 7.52) for the Tigers. It was a game where both teams missed key opportunities at the plate but the Indians were able to put together the late-inning magic to secure an extra inning victory.

The Tigers got the hitting started when Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera ripped back-to-back singles to left with one out in the first. Prince Fielder then hit a sinking line drive that Ryan Raburn managed to scoop off right above his shoe tops for the second out and then McAllister rung up Victor Martinez to end the inning.
